Disabling Right Click

Every now and then we get a customer who asks if we can disable right click options on their site. Below we will talk about why it is not a good idea, and the current available options we have.

Why is this a bad idea?

Typically the reason our customers want to disable right click is to prevent people from downloading their images. If someone is savvy enough, they will find a way to download the image, even if right click is disabled. This is simply the nature of the internet.

The other more important thing to note here is that disabling right click makes it very difficult for our builders to work on or troubleshoot a site.

What are the options?

If you have already discussed why this is a bad idea, but your customer insists on having right click disabled, here are some options to consider.

  • Use the Standard Slideshow module with a built in option to disable right click on images
  • Single Page/Layout right click disabling – should only be used if a slideshow module is not an option
  • Disabling right click site-wide – should only be used as a last resort
  • Disable text highlight – should only be used if the customer insists as this will be a site-wide adjustment

It is important to note that any form of disabling should be done only after ALL site changes have been made.
